Box of Mica Flakes |
|
Woolworth’s “Glittering Christmas Frost” box contained Mica flakes and was intended to give the appearance of snow on Christmas trees etcetera. The flakes have a slightly metallic off-white translucent appearance and it is only when embedded in glass that the silver effect is seen. The Ysart’s used this to create the effect of silver flakes in Monart Glass and later also in Vasart Glass. A cheaper and effective alternative to silver foil! Reputedly first used in 1935 for the King’s silver jubilee but there is evidence of earlier use in a 1932 Liberty catalogue bowl 354 at bottom left. |
