Overview of the Vasart and Strathearn Catalogues

Originally created for Ysartnews Issue 6 - January 1993.
Updated and expanded substantially since.

2004/5 restructuring by Frank Andrews and Bill Smith

Edited by Mary Houston-Lambert

This is a construction of Vasart and Strathearn Catalogues by collectors; no originals were made. Strathearn is included if it is in the Ysart style; other styles of Strathearn appear in a separate catalogue. Sizes are incomplete. If collectors can continue to send me photographs with details of sizes, colours etc., I will add them. Also, improved quality replacement pictures are always welcomed. Shapes can vary: for example, the bucket vase V002 has been seen in a wide range of side angles and the fluted top of V001 can also be found steeply angled or nearly at right angles to the sides.

Sizes are given in inches and millimetres as height or width/diameter.

Catalogue numbers for glassware and other objects (D & F) are fixed; paperweights are grouped chronologically and numbers may change as research continues to expand our knowledge. Hopefully the paperweight numbers can be finalized by the end of 2005.

  • Glassware
    • V numbers are allocated to vases.
    • B numbers are allocated to bowls & dishes.
    • L numbers are allocated to lighting.
    • D numbers are allocated to other objects and decoration contract pieces.
    • F numbers are allocated to objects with paperweight decorations (Bar tools etc.).
    • ST numbers will be allocated to glassware made only at Strathearn Glass Ltd.
    • SS numbers will be allocated to glassware made only at Stuart Strathearn Glass.
  • Paperweights
    • YB numbers are allocated to paperweights from the Ysart Brothers period.
    • PV numbers are allocated to paperweights from Vasart Limited period or where it was not possible to date as Ysart Brothers.
    • VS numbers are allocated to paperweights from Vasart Limited to Strathearn Glass Limited transition period. Weights may be reallocated if more information comes to light.
    • SP numbers are allocated to paperweights from Strathearn Glass Limited transition period. Some original catalogues were produced and these pages will be adjusted once examples are available.
    • F numbers are allocated to objects with paperweight decorations (Bar tools etc.).

This numbering system allows a contiguous block of vases and bowl shapes. Colours were given in the original catalogue but it has proved impractical to continue this. The source of items included in the reconstruction as being ‘signed’, ‘unsigned’ or ‘Strathearn’ is continued and a ‘question mark’ remains if no examples have been noted. Please let us know if you have something that fits the ‘?’ period. Some pieces are found with the circular Black & White label; these are from the earliest Vasart production, signed or not. Unsigned pieces could be either Vasart or Strathearn. While these can often be attributed by colour, and in some cases by feel, there would have been a period when no differences existed. Pieces do exist with both a signature and a Black and Silver label; these date to around the 1956 period. In order to support the Strathearn ‘Leaping Salmon’ seal it was found necessary to increase the glass thickness — a very useful pointer for attribution of unsigned pieces.

“D” page was renumbered on 29th January 2003.

Some items moved to the “F” page.
